Val brooks was born in the UK and emigrated to Western Australia in 1981.

She was inspired by the quality of light and the amazing colours of the Australian landscape. Always living close to the ocean Val was drawn to the movement and colours of the ocean.
For many years a ceramicist Val began painting her pots and platters with bright colours on a white background and pastels on paper was a natural progression.

Since 1991 she has painted land and seascapes and in 2006 began exploring the use of oils.

A number of trips to Europe have inspired paintings of café scenes and
other familiar views. The local beaches and WA coastal views as well as the Pilbara are still favourite sources for paintings.

Val has studied with Brian Simmonds at theTresillian Centre and at several UWA extension courses

She is a past President of the Pastel Society of WA (2016 -2020) and a member of The West Australian Society of Art

Since retiring in 2013 former Primary Art Specialist teacher Val has taught adult workshops, including 2 day workshops for Hartz (Port Hedland) and at Exmouth, evening classes in pastels for the City of Belmont and oil and pastel classes at the Tresillian centre for the City of Nedlands. Val has also conducted demos for a number of WA art societies

Val also taught 5 day pastel courses at the Claremont School of Art 2014 summer school and The Albany School of Art Summer School 2015,
