Colour is my daylong obsession, joy, and torment.

Claude Monet

Burnt Orange II by Natasha Barnes

Clare McCarthy

I moved to Perth in 2012 and have enjoyed responding to the natural environment and intensity of light here.  Colour dominates my paintings which always reflect on my local environment and personal journey.

There is a strong suggestion of nature and landscape in my work.  The organic shapes and colours often relate to experiencing a specific place. The current series Evening Walks is inspired by walking at sunset by the Indian Ocean here in Perth.  Some paintings are full of the colourful drama of the evening sky while others are more peaceful and contemplative.

I am also interested in abstract expressionism and have been inspired by artists such as Hans Hoffman and Joan Mitchell.  Other influences come from literature for example the English Romantic poets as well as Australian and New Zealand writers.More recently I have also been exploring printmaking and have an interest in shin-hangaprints (after a recent trip to Japan).

I have exhibited my work for about 25 years in New Zealand, the UK and Australia. For more information see www.CMcCart.com.
